Ammonite

DramaRomance120 min

In 1840s Lyme Regis, Kate Winslet is fossil hunter Mary Anning, a self-taught paleontologist scraping by on England’s southern coast while caring for her widowed mother. When a wealthy visitor leaves his wife Charlotte to recover by the sea, Mary reluctantly takes her in. Saoirse Ronan’s Charlotte arrives sheltered and unwell, and the distance between the two women — in class, temperament, and expectation — slowly gives way to intimacy. Loosely inspired by Anning’s life, the film stays close to the shoreline work, the cramped domestic spaces, and the social limits pressing in on both women.
