In early 20th-century England, J.R.R. Tolkien forms a close bond with three school friends over literature, art, and the life they imagine beyond the classroom, only to see that fellowship tested by the outbreak of World War I. Nicholas Hoult is Tolkien in his school and Oxford years, while Lily Collins’s Edith Bratt becomes a central part of his life as his ambitions and relationships begin to take shape. The film follows the friendships, romance, and wartime upheaval that marked the young man before he became the writer associated with Middle-earth.
