Since his wife’s death, Philippe Noiret is Inspector Louis Baroni, a withdrawn policeman who has retreated to his quiet house and the routines of grief. He is pulled back to work when a woman dies after falling from an upstairs window, and her husband, Edouard Morlaix (Michel Serrault), insists it was an accident. Baroni’s inquiry into Madame Morlaix’s death follows the case detail by detail, as a supposed fall begins to look less straightforward. The investigation turns on testimony, motive, and the uneasy gaps Baroni keeps finding as he works through a death that doesn’t sit right.
