In the last days of World War II, Maria Braun marries a soldier and almost immediately loses him to the chaos of a collapsing Germany. Hanna Schygulla is Maria, a newlywed who spends the postwar years relying on charm, nerve, and ambition as she moves through the black market and into the prosperity of the 1950s economic miracle. Klaus Lowitsch’s Hermann remains the absent center of her life, the husband she cannot quite bury or reclaim. The film follows Maria as private devotion and postwar reinvention become harder to separate.
