A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence

ComedyDramaFantasy101 min

Two traveling salesmen drift from one awkward stop to the next, trying to peddle novelty items while the world around them looks stalled, lonely, and faintly absurd. In a series of deadpan tableaux, ordinary rooms fill with people trapped in small humiliations, strained routines, and conversations that go nowhere. The film keeps returning to the salesmen as their failed pitches and weary partnership turn them into witnesses to a broader human comedy. Roy Andersson links these scenes with sudden historical intrusions and surreal turns, so everyday misery sits beside the bizarre. What unfolds is less a single plot than a chain of encounters about embarrassment, cruelty, and the strange persistence of carrying on.
