Ten days sober and still fighting the pull of alcohol, writer Don Birnam slips away from a country trip planned by his brother and girlfriend and disappears into a four-day binge. Ray Milland is Don, evasive, increasingly desperate, and convinced he can manage one more drink; Jane Wyman’s Helen is left trying to reach him before the weekend spins further out of control. Directed by Billy Wilder, the film stays close to Don’s unraveling as cravings turn into lies, panic, and the mounting threat of delirium tremens.
