DramaRomanceThrillerWar189 min

German artist Kurt Barnert is trying to build a life in West Germany after fleeing the East, but memories of childhood under the Nazis and the GDR keep surfacing in his work. Tom Schilling is Kurt, a young painter whose search for a new artistic voice overlaps with a romance with fellow student Ellie. Her father, Professor Seeband (Sebastian Koch), is a respected doctor who takes an immediate interest in the match, while Paula Beer gives Ellie a steady presence at the center of Kurt’s turbulent life. Moving through Nazi Germany, the GDR, and the postwar West, the film follows art, love, and buried history across decades.
