Connie and Edward Sumner have a house in the New York suburbs, a young son, and the routines of a settled marriage until a chance encounter pulls Connie into an affair. Diane Lane is Connie, drawn toward a stranger (Olivier Martinez) and increasingly unable to keep that part of her life separate from home. As the secrecy deepens, Richard Gere’s Edward is left to register the small changes inside their marriage and family. Adrian Lyne keeps the story close to the couple’s domestic world, where desire, guilt, and suspicion turn an ordinary household into something far less stable.
