Martin Freeman is Bilbo, edging from reluctant burglar to unlikely companion, while Ian McKellen’s Gandalf steers the company through trolls, goblin tunnels, and a dangerous stretch of Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings. Directed by Peter Jackson, the film follows the first leg of the quest as Bilbo leaves the Shire behind and steps into dwarven grudges, old legends, and a strange encounter deep underground.
