In 1763, English convict Abigail Hale escapes the gallows by agreeing to fourteen years of bondage in colonial Virginia, then finds herself caught in mounting violence on the frontier around Fort Pitt. Paulette Goddard is Abby, a woman shipped across the Atlantic just as fear spreads through the Ohio Valley. Gary Cooper’s Chris Holden, a militia scout who frees her, is drawn into a widening conflict shaped by rival colonists, illegal gun trading, and the uprising associated with Pontiac. Directed by Cecil B. DeMille, the film places its romance and adventure inside a pre-Revolutionary struggle among settlers, soldiers, and Native nations.
