The Man with the Golden Arm
CrimeDramaRomance119 min
After getting out of prison, Frankie Machine is determined to stay clean, leave illegal card dealing behind, and make a living with his drums. Frank Sinatra is Frankie, a recovering addict trying to start over while his former employer and old dealer circle back into his life. Eleanor Parker and Kim Novak shape the competing pressures around him as he tries to hold on to work, love, and sobriety. Directed by Otto Preminger, the 1955 film centers its story on addiction, relapse, and the pull of the gambling underworld, with jazz clubs and back-room poker games never far from reach.
