Eddie Murphy is Scott Roper, a San Francisco hostage negotiator who makes his living talking armed suspects out of disaster. On a jewel-store standoff, Roper and rookie partner Kevin McCall (Michael Rapaport) manage to bring in a volatile thief, only for the arrest to turn into something far more personal. Michael Wincott’s Michael Korda doesn’t stay behind bars for long, and once he’s loose, he starts circling Roper’s life — including girlfriend Ronnie Tate (Carmen Ejogo). The story moves between police procedure, wisecracking partner friction, and street-level action as Roper tries to stay ahead of a criminal who wants revenge.
