Witness for the Prosecution

CrimeDramaMysteryThriller116 min

When an affluent widow is murdered, Leonard Vole becomes the prime suspect, and an ailing London barrister reluctantly returns to court to defend him. Tyrone Power’s Leonard insists he’s innocent, but the case hinges on the testimony of his wife, with Marlene Dietrich bringing cool reserve to a witness who may either support or shatter his alibi. Charles Laughton is the sharp, weary lawyer trying to keep the trial from slipping out of his control. Billy Wilder stages the Old Bailey proceedings with clipped wit, mounting tension, and the sense that every statement in court conceals another angle.
