Burt Reynolds is former quarterback Paul Crewe, an inmate ordered to put together a football team of prisoners for a game against the guards. Eddie Albert’s warden sees the matchup as a spectacle he can control, and he offers Crewe a deal: throw the game and earn an early release. That leaves Crewe caught between his own way out and a locker room full of men who want a chance to stand up for themselves on the field. As he rounds up players from around the prison, the game becomes a power struggle between the inmates and the people running the yard.
