In 1838, a Swiss woman agrees to bear a child for an anonymous English landowner, taking the money to clear her father’s debts. The bargain is strict: once the baby is born, she must surrender the child and disappear. Seven years later, she arrives at a remote Sussex estate as governess to a troubled young girl and discovers the house belongs to the same man. Now she lives under the same roof as the daughter she was forced to give up, hiding the truth while a bond grows between them. As old arrangements tighten around the household, duty, secrecy, and desire begin to collide.
