On the eve of World War II, American reporter John Jones is sent to Europe to cover the gathering crisis and instead lands in the middle of an assassination, a spy ring, and a widening political conspiracy. Joel McCrea is Jones, a fast-talking journalist whose search for answers pulls him from diplomatic circles into chases and coded intrigue. Along the way, he joins forces with Laraine Day’s Carol Fisher, the daughter of a prominent peace advocate, while George Sanders’s polished English correspondent keeps close to the story. Alfred Hitchcock directs this prewar mystery through shadowy meetings, shifting loyalties, and one memorable stop at a windmill.
