Fred Astaire is Lucky, a gambler and dancer who misses his own wedding and is told he must earn $25,000 before he can marry. In New York, he and his partner Pop cross paths with dance instructor Penny (Ginger Rogers), and a money-making scheme turns into a successful dance partnership. As Lucky and Penny draw closer, the situation gets tangled by earlier attachments on both sides: his promise to Margaret still hangs over him, while Penny has feelings for Ricky. George Stevens moves between backstage mix-ups, romantic misunderstandings, and Astaire-Rogers numbers that blend ballroom, tap, and songs by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields.
