In 17th-century Japan, impoverished rōnin Hanshirō Tsugumo arrives at the House of Iyi asking for a place to commit seppuku. Tatsuya Nakadai is Hanshirō, a veteran with no clan, no family, and a request the household meets with suspicion, assuming he is another desperate samurai seeking charity under the cover of ritual honor. As the clan’s senior counselor presses him, Hanshirō answers with a long account of what brought him there, turning a formal audience into a reckoning over poverty, status, and the gap between the samurai code and the men who enforce it.
