In 1953 London, Bill Nighy is Mr. Williams, a veteran civil servant in the public works department whose days are swallowed by paperwork and procedure while the city rebuilds after World War II. Quiet at home and nearly invisible at the office, he has settled into a life of routine until a devastating medical diagnosis forces him to look at how little of it has felt lived. Alex Sharp and Tom Burke are among the people around him as that private reckoning begins to alter his place in the bureaucracy, with the film staying close to the muted rhythms of postwar London and one man’s late attempt to find purpose.
