In early-1960s Detroit, three young singers land a shot at stardom when a talent-show performance turns the Dreamettes into backup vocalists for a major act. Jennifer Hudson is Effie, the group’s powerhouse voice, alongside Beyoncé’s Deena and Anika Noni Rose’s Lorrell. Jamie Foxx’s ambitious manager, Curtis Taylor Jr., reshapes their sound and image as they move from the soul circuit toward the pop charts. Drawn from Motown-era show business, the story follows the group’s rise through changing music, shifting loyalties, and the pressure that comes with fame.
