Louise Banks (Amy Adams), a linguist called in after alien vessels appear across the globe, is recruited by the U.S. military to determine whether the visitors come in peace. Inside one of the hovering craft, she works with physicist Ian Donnelly, with Jeremy Renner as her partner on the scientific side, while Forest Whitaker’s Colonel Weber pushes for answers as governments grow increasingly tense. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film centers on communication under pressure: strange symbols, competing interpretations, and a race to understand an unfamiliar language before fear and miscalculation tip the situation toward conflict.
