Who Killed the Electric Car?
Documentary92 min
In 1996, electric cars briefly appeared on California roads as a clean alternative to gasoline; a decade later, most of them had been destroyed. The documentary follows the rise and disappearance of the GM EV1, tracing how automakers, oil interests, government policy, battery technology, and consumers all shaped its fate in the United States. Interviewees including Ed Begley Jr. and Ralph Nader help map out the competing agendas around a vehicle that was quiet, fast, and free of exhaust, and ask why it vanished just as fuel prices and environmental concerns were becoming harder to ignore.
