After his French wife divorces him over their unconsummated marriage and he loses the business they shared, Polish immigrant Karol Karol is stranded in Paris. Zbigniew Zamachowski’s Karol is a hairdresser whose collapse in France sends him back toward Warsaw through a smuggling plan arranged by another Polish expatriate. Dominique (Julie Delpy) remains at the center of his unraveling, even from a distance. Moving between Paris and Poland, Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film tracks Karol through humiliation, legal trouble, and the uneven terms of a relationship that continues to shape everything around him.
