In Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, Raj and Mita Batra are determined to get their daughter into an elite English-medium school, even if it means remaking their lives to fit a class-conscious world that looks down on their Hindi-speaking roots. Irrfan Khan is Raj, a successful shopkeeper scrambling to master upper-crust manners, while Saba Qamar’s Mita pushes the family toward the neighborhoods and social codes she thinks will open doors. As admissions season turns into a status race, the film keeps its focus on the Batras’ marriage, their ambitions for their child, and the divide between language, class, and belonging.
