Minding the Gap
Documentary93 min
In Rockford, Illinois, three friends who grew up skating use the streets and skate parks as refuge from volatile homes, but adulthood puts new pressure on a bond that has lasted for years. Filmmaker Bing Liu turns the camera on himself and on Zack Mulligan and Keire Johnson, following jobs, parenthood, grief, and the aftershocks of domestic abuse in their families. Built from footage gathered over more than a decade, the documentary moves between kinetic skate footage and frank conversations as these young men reckon with the versions of masculinity they inherited at home.
