France, 1940: Lucile Angellier is stuck in a tense country-house routine with her hard, controlling mother-in-law while her husband remains a prisoner of war, until German troops are quartered in the town's homes. Michelle Williams is Lucile, pulled between duty, fear, and a growing connection to the officer assigned to her house, Bruno von Falk (Matthias Schoenaerts). As Parisian refugees pass through the village and occupation presses closer, Kristin Scott Thomas's Mme. Angellier tightens her grip on the household, turning every meal, conversation, and small act of defiance into part of a wider wartime pressure.
