David Aames is a wealthy publisher whose polished life starts to fracture after a car accident leaves him disfigured just as he’s falling for Sofia. Tom Cruise’s David moves from romance and privilege into reconstructive surgery, amnesia, and a string of increasingly surreal encounters, with Sofia (Penélope Cruz) at the center of what he can and can’t trust. As jealousy, fear, and flashes of memory crowd in, the line between dream and waking life begins to dissolve, turning David’s search for answers into something stranger than a straightforward recovery.
