In 1998 Manhattan, Wally Winthrop is stuck in a loveless marriage and fixated on the auction of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s estate. Abbie Cornish is Wally, and her fascination with Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) pulls the film between her own life and the 1930s romance that led Edward VIII to give up the British throne. As Wally studies the glamour, scrutiny, and exile surrounding Wallis, the past begins to shape how she sees her own future. Madonna directs a split narrative built around royal scandal, celebrity, and private dissatisfaction.
