Charles Bronson is Paul Kersey, a pacifist New York architect whose life shatters after a home invasion leaves his wife, Joanna (Hope Lange), dead and his daughter badly injured. In a city he sees as overtaken by muggings and random street violence, Paul starts walking the streets after dark with a gun, turning himself into a vigilante and drawing attention from both criminals and police. The film roots its revenge story in grim 1970s Manhattan, following one ordinary professional as grief hardens into a private war against the city around him.
