As Nazi forces sweep across Europe in May 1940, newly appointed Prime Minister Winston Churchill faces a decision that could shape Britain’s survival: pursue peace talks with Hitler or keep fighting. Gary Oldman is Churchill in this account of the war cabinet crisis, boxed in by political rivals, a skeptical King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn), and the strain of the job at home with his wife, Clementine, portrayed by Kristin Scott Thomas. Joe Wright keeps the focus on Churchill’s first days in office, moving between parliament, private rooms, and a London shadowed by war.
