Documentary filmmaker Genya Tachibana tracks down Chiyoko Fujiwara, a legendary actress who vanished from public life at the height of her career. When he returns a key she lost years earlier, Chiyoko’s account of her life carries Genya and his cameraman through a shifting blend of memories, movie scenes, and pursuit that stretches across decades of Japanese history. The older Chiyoko (Miyoko Shoji) recounts a career shaped by one brief encounter with a fugitive stranger, while Shôzô Îzuka’s Genya finds himself moving through her memories alongside her.
