By 1957, James Whale is a retired Hollywood legend, far removed from the years when he directed Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man. Ian McKellen is Whale, now living as a semi-recluse with his housekeeper Hannah and the images of his past. When Hannah hires Clayton Boone to tend the garden, Brendan Fraser's young gardener becomes an unexpected companion for the aging director. As the two men spend time together, Whale's memories of old Hollywood, his sexuality, and the carefully arranged life around him begin to press into the present.
