George and Kathy Lutz move their family into an improbably cheap Victorian house in Amityville, Long Island, hoping for a fresh start; instead, the home’s violent history begins pressing in on every room. James Brolin is George, whose behavior starts to shift as the house exerts its influence, while Margot Kidder’s Kathy tries to keep the household steady as strange visions and disturbances take hold. Drawing on the alleged haunting that made the Amityville case famous, the film turns a roomy coastal dream home into a place where the threat seems to seep through the walls and into the family itself.
