In 1021 England, Tom Payne is Robert Cole, an orphan from a mining town who vows to learn medicine after his mother dies. His search for knowledge takes him across the medieval world to Isfahan, in Persia, where he disguises himself as a Jew to study and meets Ben Kingsley’s Ibn Sina, the most renowned healer of the age. Robert’s path from village hardship to a distant center of learning follows the barriers around who is allowed to study, the demands of apprenticeship, and the sacrifices tied to his pursuit of healing.
