DJay is a Memphis pimp nearing middle age who starts chasing a different future: making a rap record before his shot disappears. Terrence Howard’s DJay pulls in people from his orbit to build it, from Key (Anthony Anderson), an old friend with recording know-how, to Taraji P. Henson’s Shug, the pregnant singer in his house. As scraps of cash, favors, and borrowed equipment turn into bass-heavy tracks, DJay fixes on one opening: a visit from hometown rap star Skinny Black, with Ludacris bringing the local celebrity whose presence could put the music in the right hands.
