In 1953 New York City, nightclub musician Manny Balestrero is arrested after witnesses mistake him for an armed robber. Henry Fonda is Manny, an ordinary working man suddenly pushed into police stations, lineups, and courtrooms, while Vera Miles is his wife, caught in the strain the case brings home. Drawing on a true story, Alfred Hitchcock directs in a blunt, semi-documentary mode, following the damage of a wrongful accusation as it moves from the precinct into the family’s daily life.
