On a business trip to Cincinnati, British customer-service author Michael Stone (David Thewlis) arrives at the Fregoli Hotel worn down by marriage, work, and the sense that everyone around him has become interchangeable. Then he meets Lisa, Jennifer Jason Leigh’s shy Akron sales rep, whose voice and presence break through his numb routine. Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson use stop-motion animation and Tom Noonan’s near-omnipresent voice work to turn hotel rooms, conference halls, and awkward conversations into something intimate and disorienting, as Michael latches onto a brief connection that feels unlike anything else in his life.
