Anonymous VHS tapes start arriving at Fred Madison’s house, showing the inside of his home before pulling him into a murder case that slips into surveillance, gangsters, and an impossible second life. Bill Pullman is Fred, a tormented jazz musician unraveling alongside his failing marriage, while Patricia Arquette appears in two entwined roles: Fred’s wife Renee and a blonde woman connected to a young mechanic’s shifting path. Directed by David Lynch, the film threads together prison cells, nightclubs, motel rooms, and shadowy back rooms, with identity splintering as the videotapes keep turning up.
