An elaborate Southern professor rents a room from an elderly landlady while secretly assembling a crew to rob a casino under her roof. Tom Hanks is the smooth-talking mastermind, all courtly manners and grand speeches, while Irma P. Hall’s landlady turns out to be far harder to fool than he expects. The gang poses as a band to cover its movements, but the plan keeps snagging on the ordinary routines of the house and the woman who lives in it. The Coen brothers recast the caper as a black comedy of bad timing, inflated egos, and criminal incompetence.
