Roy Scheider is Frank Murphy, a veteran LAPD helicopter pilot carrying Vietnam trauma when he’s assigned to test Blue Thunder, a prototype police chopper loaded with military-grade weapons and surveillance tech. As Murphy and his new partner Lymangood (Daniel Stern) put it through its paces over Los Angeles, the aircraft’s ability to monitor apartments, record whispers, and dominate city streets starts to look less like public safety than a new form of control. The assignment drops Murphy between police brass, military interests, and a machine built for urban patrol with far more dangerous uses in mind.
