When two oil tankers are ripped apart in a 1952 blizzard off Cape Cod, Coast Guard officer Bernie Webber heads into the storm on a small rescue boat while the surviving sailors struggle to keep their broken ship afloat. Chris Pine is Bernie, a young captain ordered into near-impossible seas, and Casey Affleck’s Ray Sybert is the chief engineer trying to hold the Pendleton’s stern together long enough for help to arrive. The film moves between the rescue mission, the trapped crew’s improvisation, and the tense decisions being made on shore as the weather keeps closing in.
