In 1964 South Carolina, Dakota Fanning is Lily Owens, a 14-year-old haunted by the memory of her late mother and trapped in a troubled relationship with her father. She runs away with Rosaleen, her caregiver and only friend, to a small town tied to her mother’s past. As Lily looks for answers, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo become part of the life she finds there, widening the story beyond one girl’s search into the household and history she steps into.
