On the eve of his execution, Vincent Canelli breaks out of prison moments before the electric chair and pulls fellow condemned inmate Peter Manning into the escape. Edward G. Robinson is Canelli, a vicious gangster turning a death-row break into a hostage crisis, while Peter Manning (Peter Graves) is a bank robber and cop killer whose missing loot could finance their flight out of the country. With help from Jean Parker’s girlfriend on the outside and an accomplice posing as a reporter, the fugitives seize hostages and head for the money as police close in.
