Lenny Brown moves to California to make his fortune in tax-shelter investments, only to find himself $700,000 in debt when the federal government changes the rules. James Woods is Lenny, an ambitious striver who turns to cocaine after his friend Joel (John Kapelos) offers it as the extra boost he thinks he needs. As his financial trouble gives way to dependence, the film tracks Lenny's slide from polished confidence into panic, paranoia, and mounting damage to his work and personal life.
