On a Mediterranean base during World War II, Alan Arkin is Yossarian, a U.S. airman trying to get himself declared insane so he can stop flying combat missions. The problem is the rule at the center of it all: asking to be grounded counts as proof that he’s sane enough to keep going back up. Mike Nichols directs Joseph Heller’s anti-war satire as Yossarian gets caught in a loop of military logic, shifting orders, and officers more concerned with procedure than survival. Around Arkin, the ensemble includes Martin Balsam, Art Garfunkel, Buck Henry, and Orson Welles.
