La Traviata

Drama109 min

Teresa Stratas is Violetta, a Parisian woman whose romance with Alfredo collides with the expectations of the society around them. Plácido Domingo gives Alfredo an eager, openhearted presence, while Cornell MacNeil's Giorgio enters as the father determined to shape the affair's future. Directed by Franco Zeffirelli, this screen adaptation of Verdi's opera is sung in Italian and built around the performers' full vocal turns, with ballrooms, bedrooms, and drawing rooms framing the lovers in a world where private feeling is never far from public judgment.
