Melancholia

DramaSci-Fi136 min

At a lavish wedding reception at her sister’s mansion, Justine begins to come apart just as a mysterious planet draws dangerously close to Earth. Kirsten Dunst is Justine, a bride whose celebration slips into dread, while Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Claire tries to keep the family and the evening from unraveling. Kiefer Sutherland appears as Claire’s husband, watching the strange celestial threat with a very different kind of certainty. Lars von Trier frames the story around two sisters, a brittle wealthy household, and the collision between private despair and an approaching end-of-the-world crisis.
