After surviving a catastrophic plane crash, San Francisco architect Max Klein starts moving through life as if death no longer applies to him. Jeff Bridges is Max, detached from his family and drawn toward increasingly reckless acts, while Isabella Rossellini's Laura watches her husband come home altered in ways she can’t reach. Another survivor, Carla (Rosie Perez), is trapped in grief and guilt, and Max’s bond with her worries the psychologist trying to pull him back to earth. Peter Weir treats the crash less as spectacle than as the start of a strange, unsettling aftermath.
