When a mailman named S.D. Kluger starts answering children’s questions about Santa, he tells the story of baby Kris, a foundling raised by the Kringle family of elf toymakers. Mickey Rooney is the grown Kris, determined to bring toys to the children of Sombertown despite a mean-spirited mayor who wants them kept out. Between the Kringles and the town stands the Winter Warlock, turning every trip into a standoff. Fred Astaire narrates as Kluger, threading Kris’s courtship and Christmas songs through an origin story for Santa’s name, his toy workshop, and other familiar holiday traditions.
