Three fighters are pulled to a remote island tournament where a tenth straight victory for the sorcerer Shang Tsung would hand Earth over to invading forces. Robin Shou is Liu Kang, a martial artist fighting beside movie star Johnny Cage and Special Forces officer Sonya Blade, while Christopher Lambert’s thunder god Rayden can guide them but not enter the contest himself. What follows is a run of hand-to-hand battles against masked assassins, monsters, and supernatural rivals, with Earth’s survival tied to each round.
